What's Open, Closed For Thanksgiving 2019 In Alexandria

While many services are closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, some will remain closed on Black Friday.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — While closures are a given for most services on Thanksgiving, Alexandria residents should be aware of closures on surrounding days like Black Friday.

Here are the openings and closings to know on and around Thursday, Nov. 28 (Thanksgiving) and Friday, Nov. 29 (Black Friday). Government offices, libraries and certain recreation centers will be closed for Thanksgiving and Black Friday, while services like the animal shelter and post offices will operate on Black Friday.

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed Nov. 28-29

State offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk's Office will be open until noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and will be closed on Nov. 28-29. The Alexandria Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will close at noon on Nov. 27, and will remain closed on Nov. 28-29. The Department of Motor Vehicles office (2681 Mill Road) will be closed Nov. 28-30.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed Nov. 27-29.

Animal shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be closed for business on Nov. 28, but will still host its annual "Kongs-giving" event, from noon to 1:30 p.m., to create special holiday treats for homeless animals. The shelter will be open on Nov. 29, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with animal visitation beginning at noon.

DASH Bus: On Nov. 28, the Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) bus service will not operate, but the free King Street Trolley will operate on its regular schedule, from 10:30 a.m. to midnight, between the King Street Metro Station and waterfront. On Nov. 29, both DASH and the King Street Trolley will operate on their regular weekday schedules.

Health facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King Street) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard Street) will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and will remain closed on Nov. 28-29. The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King Street) will close at noon on Nov. 27, and will remain closed on Nov. 28-29.

Historic sites and museums: All City of Alexandria museums will be closed on Nov. 28. On Nov. 29, all museums will be open during regular hours except for the Archaeology Museum (which will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and the Black History Museum (closed). The Black History Museum will have special hours on Dec. 1 for "Museum Shop Sunday," from 1 to 4 p.m.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778, and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound lot: The City's Impound Facility (5248 Eisenhower Avenue) will be closed on Nov. 28-29.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on Nov. 28-29. The Law Library (520 King Street) will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and will remain closed on Nov. 28-29.

Metrorail: On Nov. 28, the Metro system will be open 8 a.m.-11 p.m. and operate on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.

Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Nov. 28. See bus timetables.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Thursday, Nov. 28. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on Nov. 28. All normal parking restrictions will be enforced on Friday, Nov. 29.

Post offices: Closed on Nov. 28.

Recreation and Art Centers: All City of Alexandria recreation and art centers, including Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers, and Torpedo Factory Art Center will be closed on Nov. 28. On Nov. 29, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Charles Houston and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All other recreation centers will be closed on Nov. 29.

Trash and recycling collection: Residential refuse and recycling will be collected on the regularly scheduled day during the week of Nov. 25, including on Nov. 28. On Thanksgiving Day, trash and recycling collection will begin at 6 a.m., in order to clear routes early for the Annual Turkey Trot. The collection staff opted to start earlier on Thanksgiving Day in order to spend Thursday evening and Friday with their families, rather than having all day Thursday off and working on Friday.
