Wind Advisory Issued For NoVA And DC, Strong Winds Expected

Areas of Northern Virginia could get gusts up to 50 mph while the wind advisory is in effect.

WASHINGTON, DC—Wind gusts could reach up to 50 mph in Northern Virginia and DC Monday, as the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory.

The wind advisory is effective from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 15. During the advisory period, strong winds may blow down tree limbs, trees and power lines.

Officials say that west winds of 20 to 30 mph are possible on Monday, with gusts up to 50 mph. Those driving high-profile vehicles should be especially cautious. Keep both hands on the wheel.

Winds are expected to be strongest from late morning to afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Scattered power outages are possible. Check statewide outages on this outage map.

The advisory applies to the District of Columbia, the Virginia counties of Clarke, Prince William, Fairfax, Arlington, northern Fauquier and Loudoun, as well as the cities of Manassas, Manassas Park, Falls Church and Alexandria.

Here is the full National Weather Service forecast for this week in the DC area:

  • Monday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 60. Windy, with a west wind 23 to 29 mph, with gusts as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. The night is mostly clear, with a low around 43. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68. The night is partly cloudy, with a low around 53.
  • Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 65 and the night is mostly cloudy, with a low around 55.
  • Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 77. A chance of showers at night and mostly cloudy with a low around 64. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
  • Friday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm during the day and night. High near 74 and low around 59. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.
