Winter Weather Advisory Extended Until 12 Noon Saturday in Northern Virginia

National Weather Service has extended its Winter Weather Advisory until 12 noon for areas inside the Beltway and surrounding area.

The National Weather Service early Saturday extended its Winter Weather Advisory for much of Northern Virginia until 12 noon Saturday.

Sleet and freezing rain will continue with trace amounts of sleet accumulating along with a tenth-inch of ice accumulating from the freezing rain. Freezing rain will continue through much of the morning, and then change to rain at around 12 noon Saturday, the weather service said.

Hazardous travel will continue to impact roads and walkways, the NWS warned. Temperatures in the mid-20s Saturday morning should rise to the mid-30s by 12 noon.

The Virginia State Police report 41 crashes on area roadways in Northern Virginia including a fatal crash on I-495 northbound near Gallows Road that involved 25 to 30 cars. Traffic there is being diverted off of the Beltway until 9 a.m. Tolls on the express lanes have been lifted until the roads reopen.

Icy road conditions are endangering travelers across the area.
