19 People Displaced After Fire in Falls Church

Malfunctioning microwave sparked apartment fire, caused $100,000 in damages.

A malfunctioning microwave sparked a fire Thursday night in Falls Church that displaced 19 people and caused $100,000 in damages.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue officials said the fire started in an apartment atop the four story building in the 3400 block of Carlyn Hill Dr. at about 7:35 p.m. About 60 firefighters battled the two-alarm blaze for 30 minutes before getting it under control.

One firefighter sustained non-life threatening injuries while battling the blaze.

The two people in the apartment where the blaze started, along with 17 other people from seven other units were displaced.

The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced, according to a release. One firefighter sustained a non-life threatening injury while fighting the fire.
