Abdelhamid (Hamed) Ahmad Sarsour, 71, Of Annandale

Hamed is remembered for owning local businesses and spending time with his 11 grandchildren.

Abdelhamid (Hamed) Ahmad Sarsour, 71, of Annandale, passed away on June 11, 2020 from complications due to COVID-19 and was laid to rest on June 13.

Hamed was born in El-Bireh Palestine in 1948. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1970 and was the first college graduate in his family, receiving a Bachelor’s of Science degree in geology/chemistry from Shaw University (Raleigh) in 1973/74. After college, he returned to the DC area (Bailey’s Crossroads), where he along with his family owned and operated his first business, a restaurant called "Steak n’ a Sack."

In 1975, he was married to the love of his life Nawal Ottallah (1955-1999) and had four children while living in Annandale. In the 90s, Hamed owned and operated another business in Bailey’s Crossroads, Lacey Grocery, where you would find him as a pillar of the community until his retirement in 2010. In his later life, Hamed loved spending time with his 11 grandchildren, and he was a regular at all their soccer games and karate tournaments.

Hamed was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s late in his life, which robbed him much of his golden years. He is survived by a large, loving family, including his father Ahmad Mohammad Sarsour, two sons Ashraf and Ahmad, and two daughters Maisa and Hana, and 11 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Alzheimer’s Association.

In accordance with Islamic tradition and the circumstances of COVID-19, Hamed was laid to rest, without a wake, immediately after his passing, at National Memorial Park in Falls Church, Virginia.
