The food website The Daily Meal has picked the best ice cream stand in every state. Here's where to find DC and Virginia's tastiest treat.

WASHINGTON, DC — Ice cream is just a good idea any time, but summer's warmth makes it a perfect treat on a muggy day. If you are craving a rich, cool, creamy ice cream cone, the food website The Daily Meal has just released its picks of the Best Ice Cream Stand in Every State, including Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The best place for ice cream in Virginia is Island Creamery in Chincoteague, says the website, while the best ice cream stand in DC is Thomas Sweet.

Here's how The Daily Meal folks describe the range of yummy ice cream purveyors nationwide: "There is no wrong season to eat ice cream, but it really hits the spot in summer. Everything's better with ice cream, especially if you add sprinkles, whipped cream and a cherry on top. ... Whether you’re in Texas or Maine, Alaska or Wisconsin, we have found ice creamstands, shops, creameries, dairy farms and more that are scooping up the creamiest, tastiest homemade ice cream — no matter the weather."

Island Creamery, 6243 Maddox Blvd. in Chincoteague, says it its product is homemade in small batches with fresh cream and milk from local cows, locally grown fruits or items from its kitchen. "The end result is the freshest and hopefully most delicious ice cream you’ll find anywhere," the shop says on its website.

Some of its most popular ice cream flavors are: Bourbon Caramel Crunch, Pony Tracks (vanilla ice cream with homemade hot fudge, peanut butter cups and peanut butter), Marsh Mud (double chocolate ice cream), Java Jolt, Cotton Candy Party, Birthday Cake, Strawberry Sorbet in the spring, Orange Juice Sorbet in the summer and Apple Cider Sorbet in the fall.

Here's how the Daily Meal editors describe Island Creamery: "Since 1975, Island Creamery has been offering cool treats that pair perfectly with a day at the beach on Virginia's Chincoteague Island. This family business serves delicious fresh ice cream made with local milk and ingredients. Special flavors include pineapple upside-down cake, cherries jubilee and birthday cake. They also have vegan options made with coconut milk."

Thomas Sweet now has several locations, but the original is at 3214 P Street N.W., Washington, D.C. There you can find ice cream, frozen yogurt, fudge, chocolates and coffee.
