Falls Plaza To Be Renamed Birch & Broad, Undergo Renovations

FALLS CHURCH, VA — Renovations on the Falls Plaza shopping center will begin in mid-April, according to shopping center owner Federal Realty. The shopping center will also be renamed Birch & Broad.

The 144,000-square-foot community shopping center, located at 1200 West Broad Street in Falls Church, will get a facelift and new amenities. The project will renovate the shopping center look with modern farmhouse aesthetics, add new signage, enhance the landscaping, and add multiple outdoor amenity areas.

Federal Realty expects the project could be completed this year before the holiday season. The name change refers to Broad Street and Birch Street, the latter of which divides the eastern and western parts of the shopping center.

"This transformation underscores Federal’s long-term commitment to our properties, merchants, and the communities in which we operate," said Jay Brinson, vice president of development at Federal Realty. "The new public gathering spaces and expanding café seating areas combined with the new architecture and placemaking upgrades will make Birch and Broad a place that truly captures the essence of community, a quality for which the City of Falls Church is recognized."

The anchoring grocery store Giant Food will also get an interior remodel.

"We are excited to complete the remodel of our Giant at the shopping center, which will allow our customers to experience the new layout and décor that we have designed to make navigating the store clear and simple," said Gary Budd, director of strategic planning and execution at Giant Food. "We have expanded our offerings across aisles and departments, creating a convenient, one-stop-shop for the community. The enhanced store will significantly upgrade all of our fresh departments and prepared offerings, including a new gourmet cheese
case and a fresh pizza program."

Federal Realty is the longtime owner of the shopping center. It acquired the Giant Food side of Falls Plaza in 1967 and the east side of Birch Street anchored by Staples and Road Runner Sports in 1972.
