George Mason High Reaches State Basketball Semifinals
The Mustangs rolled over Northumberland High 68-35 in the quarterfinals Saturday.

If the George Mason High School Mustangs can beat Floyd County High’s defense on Friday, they will play for their second consecutive championship.
The Mustangs beat Northumberland High 68-35 Saturday in the Virginia High School League Basketball State Tournament to reach the semifinals. Tip off for the game in Richmond is 10:30 a.m.
“Friday is going to be a tough one,” said LaBryan Thomas, head basketball coach of the Mustangs. “Floyd County is pretty good.”

Thomas said Floyd County has 14 girls on the roster and they play all 14 in the course of a game. He said they’re the best team he’s seen all season.
Against Northumberland, Stephanie Cheney scored 23 points and grabbed 20 rebounds and Katie Goodwin, who also had a double double, scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Thomas said his team will have to play well to beat Floyd County.

“If we beat their pressure we have a chance, but we have to beat their pressure,” Thomas said.
