Harvey's To Open In September In Falls Church

Chef Thomas Harvey, previously executive chef at Tuskie's Restaurant Group of Virginia, will open his first restaurant.

FALLS CHURCH, VA — Chef Thomas Harvey, who has worked for chefs and restaurant groups in the DC region, will open his own restaurant in Falls Church called Harvey's.

The restaurant is slated to open in September 2021 at 513 West Broad Street in Falls Church. The 2,600-square-foot counter service restaurant will feature a 48-seat dining room, 12-seat beer and wine bar, and 70-seat outdoor patio. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch will be offered.

Harvey's will focus on American cuisine, incorporating various cultural dishes with locally-sourced seasonal ingredients. For breakfast, diners can order a croissant, biscuit or English muffin with scrambled egg and options like sage sausage with cheddar cheese and smoked tomato chutney; thick-cut bacon with American cheese, caramelized onion and mayonnaise; charred mushroom with IPA-ioli; or friend chicken with pimiento cheese and hot honey. Lunch sandwich options include beer cheesesteak with peppers, onions and mushrooms; pastrami Reuben with sauerkraut, Thousand Island dressing and Swiss cheese on sourdough; Harvey's burger with American cheese or a Beyond Burger substitute; and Toad in The Hole on a stick of Bratwurst, Yorkshire pudding and beer mustard.

The opening menu will showcase several entrées: fried chicken with macaroni and cheese and braised greens, cedar plank salmon with summer vegetable succotash and brown butter glaze, spaghetti bolognese, and chicken cobb with local greens, tomato, radish, hard boiled egg, red onion, cucumber, Gorgonzola and scallion ranch. If diners have room for dessert, the menu offers options like an éclair, tiramisu, Russian honey cake, warm chocolate brownie à la mode, gelato and sorbet.

Wine and beer will be available for dine-in or takeout. The wine menu will showcase old and new world vintners as well as local options. The beer menu will focus on local breweries with a few breweries from other regions. There will be five drafts and a rotating selection of bottles and cans.

Breakfast prices will range from $7 to $12, sandwiches will range from $12 to $18, entrees will range from $13 to $28, and desserts will range from $8 to $12. After breakfast, sandwiches, entrees, sides and desserts will be available all day. Wine bottle prices will range from $25 to $80, and wines by the glass will be priced from $8 to $18. Beer prices will range from $7 to $13 for draft, and $3 to $18 for bottles and canned beers.

Along with restaurant service, Harvey's will also have a retail market. The market will offer specialty items found in the chef's restaurant pantry and grab-and-go foods. Virginia farmers such as Seven Hills Foods in Lynchburg and Sylvanaqu Farms in Westmorland will offer proprietary items exclusively in Harvey’s market.

Harvey is opening his first restaurant after working at others in the region. A 2012 graduate of L’Academie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg, Maryland, he worked for chefs such as James Beard award-winners Frank Ruta at Paella and Fabio Trabbochi at Casa Luca Restaurant. His last gig was executive chef at Tuskie’s Restaurant Group of Virginia, overseeing restaurants at the group's eateries: Leesburg's Tuscarora Mill, South Street Under Deli-Bakery and Fire Works Pizza, Purcellville's Magnolias at the Mill and Arlington's Fireworks American Pizzeria and Bar.

Harvey, who lives with his wife in Alexandria, searched for a space to open a restaurant before deciding on Falls Church. The 513 West Broad Street location previously hosted Plaka Grill, which moved to the Birch & Broad shopping center (formerly West Falls Plaza).

Harvey's hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Breakfast runs until 11 a.m. on weekdays and brunch until 12 p.m. on weekends. For more information, visit harveysva.com.
