Judy Lubnow: Mason Boosters Volunteer Dies at 50

Lubnow will be remembered through a scholarship at George Mason High School.

Since she and her family arrived in the City of Falls Church in 2004, Judy Lubnow was involved with the PTA and the George Mason Athletic Boosters.

Sunday morning she died at her home at the age of 50.

Tom Lubnow, her husband of 24 years, said Judy helped the boosters with spirit wear clothing, the school’s mulch sale and concession stands at the various sporting events at the school.

"We moved here in 2004 and she did PTA and boosters since then,” Lubnow said.

Judy was born in New Jersey on Jan. 11, 1963 and raised in Maryland. She and her husband met as students at Virginia Tech around 1985 and have four children. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home (1102 W. Broad St., Falls Church) and a funeral mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Saint James Catholic Church (905 Park Ave., Falls Church).

Judy is survived by her husband Tom; children Brian, Stephen, Emily and Sarah; father Edward Sedlar; brothers Jim (Christine) Sedlar, Eddie (Crissy) Sedlar; sister Cindy (Jamie) Ringley; mother-in-law Pat Lubnow; sister-in-law Teri Whitty; brother-in-laws Dave (Ellen Stohl) Lubnow, Jeff (Robin) Lubnow; seventeen nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Joan and her father-in-law Tom Lubnow.

There are about 12,000 residents in the City of Falls Church and many of them knew of Judy and more will know of her through a scholarship organized through the boosters. There’s currently no official name for the scholarship and the criteria hasn’t been set yet either. George Mason High School Athletic Director Tom Horn said for certain the scholarship will go to a deserving student.

“What’s remarkable about Judy is she never ran out of time or resources to help,” Horn said. “She didn’t have to develop projects to make them successful, she just had to be a part of them to achieve that.”

City Councilman Phil Duncan has known the Lubnow family for about six years first when his son played baseball with Brian and later played football with Stephen. He said Judy was always helping the boosters with various tasks or cheering on the various Mustangs’ teams, just as she was three weeks ago at a baseball game at Mason.

“I cannot ever remember her saying she had a tough day at the office,” Duncan said.

The scholarship is one way Judy’s name will live on at Mason but the boosters are considering doing more with the family’s blessing said boosters President Craig Cheney. Cheney, like others, met Judy through her work with the boosters. He described her as a behind the scene person who made things happen. Once it became known she was ill, Cheney said the boosters began throwing around ideas on what else they could do as a tribute to one of their hardest workers.

“We certainly want to do something in her honor,” Cheney said.
