Labor Day 2019: What's Open, Closed In Falls Church
As you celebrate the unofficial close of summer, here's the operating status for transit, community centers, trash collection and more.
FALLS CHURCH, VA — With the closing of outdoor pools and kids back in school, Labor Day is considered the unofficial end of summer. As you have your summer send-off barbecues, many services will be taking a break for the long holiday weekend.
City of Falls Church and Fairfax County offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 2. Other services may be closed or run on a different schedule.
Here are the openings and closings to know for Labor Day weekend.

City of Falls Church Offices: Closed on Sept. 2. This includes offices at City Hall (300 Park Avenue), Gage House (401 Great Falls Street), and the Property Yard (7100 Gordon Road). The City Council work session regularly scheduled for Monday will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Center (223 Little Falls Street).
Fairfax County Government Offices: Closed on Sept. 2.

State Courts: Closed on Sept. 2.
Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Aug. 30-Sept. 2 for Labor Day holiday.
Falls Church City Public Schools: Tuesday, Sept. 3 is the first day of school.
Community Centers: The Falls Church Community Center is closed through Saturday, Aug. 31 for annual cleaning and maintenance. Customer service staff will be available during the week for questions and class registration. The Community Center will also be closed for the Labor Day holiday on Sept. 1 and 2. The Community Center will reopen at normal business hours on Sept. 3.
Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) programs, activities and facilities will be closed Saturday, Aug. 31 through Monday, Sept. 2.
Fairfax Connector and Fastran: Fairfax Connector bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule on Sept. 2. Fastran will not operate on Sept. 2. See www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector for more information.
Libraries: Mary Riley Styles Public Library will be closed on Sept. 1 and 2. All Fairfax County libraries will be closed on Sept. 2.
Metrorail: On Sept. 2, the Metro system will be open 8 a.m.-11 p.m. and operate on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.
The six Yellow and Blue Line Metro stations south of Reagan National Airport are closed and are scheduled to reopen on Monday, Sept. 9. Until then, free shuttle buses are serving the closed stations. For more information, visit www.wmata.com/service/rail/PlatformProject.
Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Sept. 2. See bus timetables.
Post Offices: Closed on Sept. 2.
Recreation Centers: All Fairfax County recreation centers are open at the regular times until 6 p.m., except George Washington RECenter, which is closed.
Trash and Recycling: City of Falls Church collections happen on Wednesdays. Fairfax County trash and recycling collections occur on Sept. 2 while the Customer Service Center is closed. Contact private providers for any schedule changes. The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) and I-95 Landfill (9850 Furnace Road, Lorton) are open for regular hours on Sept. 2.
