Sophomore Wins Vehicle Decal Contest In Falls Church

Juliana Melton's artwork of The State Theatre will be featured on the next Falls Church vehicle decal.

From the City of Falls Church: At the City Council Meeting, the winners of the 2018-2019 Vehicle Decal Design Contest were announced.

  • First Place: "My Pretty Little City" by Juliana Melton, 10th Grade at George Mason High School (GMHS)
  • Second Place: "The Little City Takes Flight" by William Ng, 9th Grade at George Mason High School (GMHS)
  • Third Place: "Cherry Hill in the Summertime" by Tessa Boneau, 9th Grade at George Mason High School (GMHS)
  • Fourth Place: "Riding into the Future" by Jack Sykes, 10th Grade at George Mason High School (GMHS)
  • Fifth Place: "Falls Church: A Fruitful Community" by Myra Zingg, 11th Grade at Goerge Mason High School (GMHS)

In her entry submission essay, Ms. Melton explained why the State Theatre inspired her design:"My design is inspired by the marquee sign that hangs over the State Theatre. I decided to use this element of Falls Church as the model of my design because I believe the State Theatre is a distinct and popular attraction in The Little City. The theater itself can be symbolic of the busyness and excitement present in the City of Falls Church. It also portrays the cultural aspect of Falls Church, for this small city holds many different events, and entertainment is one of the first things that I associate with it."

Twenty area high school students submitted designs to the City of Falls Church Treasurer. A citizen panel chose the top five designs that best reflected the City community. Online voting for the top five finalists was open to the public from January 22 through February 22. Prizes for the five finalists were awarded at the Council meeting: First Place $750, Second Place $500, Third Place $250, Fourth Place $150, and Fifth Place was awarded a Gift Certificate to a local restaurant.
