Veterans Day 2019: Ceremony, Closings In Falls Church
Veterans Day honors all who have served in the U.S. armed forces. Here's what's open and closed for the federal holiday.
FALLS CHURCH, VA — Veterans Day falls on Monday, Nov. 11, and there will be a ceremony and various schedule changes in Falls Church.
All are invited to the ceremony at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at the Falls Church City Veterans Memorial in front of the Community Center, 223 Little Falls Street. The keynote speaker is Beverly Donner, a former commander with the Public Health Service who treated civilian casualties in Vietnam. The ceremony will also feature special remarks and remembrances, a tribute for those missing in action, a wreath presentation and prayer for departed veterans, and performances by the Falls Church City Concert Band.
The ceremony will be presided over by Master of Ceremonies Harry Shovlin with representatives from the Greater Falls Church Veterans Council. The council includes the American Legion Post 130, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Martin-Leppert-Sipes Post 9274, Catholic War Veterans Paul and Jacques Martin Post 1652, Falls Church Daughters of the American Revolution, Northern Virginia WWII Veterans, the Veterans Memorial Committee, volunteers coordinated by the city's Recreation and Parks Department.

Schedule changes in Falls Church
City of Falls Church and Fairfax County government offices: Closed on Nov. 11.
State courts: Closed on Nov. 11.

Schools: Falls Church and Fairfax County public schools are open on Nov. 11.
Fairfax Connector and Fastran: Fairfax Connector bus service will operate on a holiday weekday schedule on Nov. 11. See www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector for more information.
Falls Church Community Center: Open 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Libraries: Mary Riley Styles Public Library is closed on Nov. 11.
The Fairfax County library catalog will be unavailable starting Nov. 6 at 9 p.m. as it is upgraded. Residents can check out and hold materials, but catalog searches and account services will be interrupted. The library will be closed Nov. 11 and 12 and reopens with the new library catalog on Nov. 13.
Metrorail: The Metro system will be open 5 a.m.-11:30 p.m. and operate on a Saturday schedule.
Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Saturday and supplemental schedule on Nov. 11. See bus timetables.
Post offices: Closed on Nov. 11.
Fairfax County recreation centers: Open regular hours on Nov. 11.
Trash and Recycling: City of Falls Church collection happens on Wednesdays. Fairfax County trash and recycling collections occur on Nov. 11 while the Customer Service Center is closed. Contact private providers for any schedule changes. The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) and I-95 Landfill (9850 Furnace Road, Lorton) are open.
