What's Open, Closed In Falls Church For New Year's Day 2020

FALLS CHURCH, VA — While New Year's Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, be aware the holiday may affect the hours of city government offices, schools, public transportation and more.

City of Falls Church and Fairfax County Government offices: Closed on Jan. 1.

State courts: Courts in Fairfax and Arlington counties are closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Falls Church City Public Schools and Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Dec. 23-Jan. 3.

Community centers: The Falls Church Community Center will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed on Jan. 1. Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) programs, activities and facilities will be closed on Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Fairfax Connector and Fastran: Fairfax Connector bus service will operate regular weekday service on Dec. 31 and Sunday service on Jan. 1. Fastran will not operate after 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 through Jan. 1. See www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector for more information.

Libraries: Mary Riley Styles Public Library and all Fairfax County libraries close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and are closed on Jan. 1.

Metrorail: On Dec. 31, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. with special late night service until 2 a.m. New Year's Day. On Jan. 1, Metrorail will operate 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities New Year's Day, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.

Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. See bus timetables.

Post offices: Closed Jan. 1. No mail will be delivered.

Recreation centers: All RECenters except George Washington RECenter are open until 4 p.m. on Dec. 31. RECenters except George Washington RECenter are open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on New Year's Day.

Trash and recycling: City of Falls Church collections won't happen on Wednesday, Jan. 1; solid waste curbside collection will be on Saturday, Jan. 4. There is no change to Fairfax County collections. Contact private collectors for service changes. The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road) will close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 through Jan. 1.
