'Code Orange' Air Quality Alert Issued in Herndon

The heat index in the area will reach 90 degrees by noon and will rise as high as 93 degrees by 3 p.m.

A “code orange” air quality alert has been issued in Herndon on Tuesday, the National Weather Service confirmed.

This means that the air will be unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children; people suffering from asthma, heart disease or lung disease; and the elderly.

To avoid the effects of air pollution, avoid strenuous activity or outdoor exercise if possible.

The heat index will hit 90 degrees by noon and will rise as high as 93 degrees by 3 p.m. before temperatures begin to drop in the early evening hours.

The air quality alert was issued by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Maryland Department of the Environment, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the District Department of the Environment.
