Fog Advisory Issued For NoVA, DC; Visibility Low On Interstates
A dense fog advisory is in place Friday night for the Washington, DC, region because of limited visibility, especially on metro interstates.
WASHINGTON, DC — A dense fog advisory is in effect for the Washington, D.C., area, as well as parts of Virginia. The National Weather Service issued the advisory around 5 p.m. Friday, and it remains in effect until midnight. Drivers are urged to be careful on the region's interstate highways.
Visibility may be limited to about one-quarter mile or less due to dense fog across the region Friday night, according to the advisory. Drivers should use headlights and leave extra distance ahead of them, the advisory says.
These areas are included in the advisory: Washington D.C., Dale City, Manassas, Woodbridge, Lake Ridge, Montclair, Reston, Herndon, Annandale, Centreville, Chantilly, McLean, Franconia, Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, Warrenton, Turnbull, Purcellville, Leesburg, Ashburn, and Sterling.

During a fog warning, drivers should not use high beams, which can cause glare. Instead, drivers are encouraged to use their fog lights and low beams.
"Fog should improve some when steadier rain arrives later tonight," the Weather Service said.

Here are precautions drivers can take to stay safe during periods of dense fog:
- Increase following distance.
- Slow down.
- Avoid unnecessary lane changes.
Rain is expected much of Friday and Saturday, according to the forecast from the National Weather Service.
Friday Night: Rain, mainly after 7 p.m. Areas of dense fog before midnight. Low around 41. Light and variable wind becoming north around 6 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
Saturday: Rain likely, mainly between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 50. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39. West wind 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 50. West wind 6 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
Sunday Night: A slight chance of rain after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
