Herndon Village Network (HVN) currently has over 100 senior citizen members, who pay a one-time $20 registration fee for unlimited access to day and evening transportation on weekdays and weekends. This more organized concept of neighbors helping neighbors encourages older residents to age in the Herndon community and allows them to maintain established routines and connections, which results in a higher quality of life.
- In 2019, HVN drivers provided senior citizens 908 rides, totalling 19,578 miles.
- In 2020, HVN continued its essential services through the pandemic, helping senior citizens stay healthy by providing them private transportation to accomplish “must do” errands. This year, HVN also offered to run these errands for senior citizens and to give them shelf-stable groceries every other month. To date, the nonprofit has delivered 171 large bags of food and other helpful items. HVN is excited to continue its transportation and grocery services in 2021.
Mary, who uses Herndon Village Network transportation for shopping and doctor visits, explains “Each person who drives you is like an old friend.”
