Herndon Considers Changing Office Term Lengths, Town Election Date

The Town of Herndon is holding three public hearings on a resolution to change elected office term lengths and the town's election date.

The Town of Herndon is holding three public hearings on a resolution to change elected office term lengths from two to four years and the town’s election date from May to November.

The town’s Mayor and six council members are currently elected to two-year terms through biennial elections that take place on the first Tuesday in May on even-numbered years.

The proposed resolution calls for four-year, staggered terms for council members with three council member positions on the ballot every two years (biennial elections would remain in place).

The Mayoral position would appear on the ballot every four years and the elected Mayor would serve a four-year term.

The resolution also calls to move the town’s election day from May to the first Tuesday in November, coinciding with election day for county, state and federal offices.

The Herndon Town Council will hold public hearings on the resolution on following days:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 28
  • Tuesday, Nov. 11
  • Tuesday, Nov. 25

The Council expects to act on the resolution at its Tuesday, Dec. 9 public hearing.

All public hearings begin at 7 p.m. in the Ingram Council Chambers at 765 Lynn Street. Hearings are also telecast live on HCTV and are available via streaming video on the town’s website at www.herndon-va.gov. Citizens are encouraged to review the resolution on the website and may submit comment to the Town Clerk’s Office, town.clerk@herndon-va.gov or (703) 435-6804.
