Herndon Mayor Lisa C. Merkel Re-Elected

HERNDON, VA — Congratulations to Lisa C. Merkel for being reelected as Mayor of the Town of Herndon for the 2017-2018 term! Merkel has served as the town’s Mayor since 2012.
With a very strong turn out, Herndon's voters cast 4,898 votes for Merkel and 2,382 for challenger Jasbinder Singh.
"I’m honored that the residents of Herndon have placed their trust in me once again, and look forward to serving as Mayor for the next two years. We are excited to see our downtown plan come to life, and I’m pleased that my positive campaign resonated with so many," said Merkel. "My opponent graciously congratulated me and I appreciate his service to the town."

The six Town Council members elected for the 2017-2018 term are: Jennifer Baker, Jeffrey L. Davidson, Signe V. Friedrichs, William J. “Bill” McKenna, Sheila A. Olem, and Grace Han Wolf. Baker, Olem and Wolf currently serve on the 2014-2016 Town Council.

Voters turned out in big numbers in the Town of Herndon's three precincts: Herndon # 1 (Herndon Elementary); Herndon # 2 (Herndon Community Center); and Herndon #3 (Herndon Middle School), according to the three location's Station Chiefs. There were no problems reported at any of the polling places.
"We had a steady stream of voters all day and the lines went quickly," said Chen Yang, Station Chief at Herndon Middle School.

Voter turn out was very strong at the 3 polling places, according to the Fairfax County Government:
- Herndon #1: 84% turn out with 3,223 votes cast out of 3,836 active registered voters (2,636 in-person, 587 absentee)
- Herndon #2: 80.8% turn out with 3,324 votes cast out of 4,116 active registered voters (2,745 in-person, 579 absentee)
- Herndon #3: 76.7% turn out with 2,755 votes cast out of 3,593 active registered voters (2,239 in-person, 516 absentee)
Countywide, Election Day turnout was 56%, according to the Fairfax County Government.
Here's the break down of votes in the Mayoral race in Herndon:
- Herndon #1: Merkel: 1,619; Singh: 891
- Herndon #2: Merkel: 1,786; Singh: 806
- Herndon #3: Merkel: 1,493; Singh: 685
Election results become official upon certification by the Fairfax County Electoral Board, which administers elections for the Town of Herndon.
The 2017-2018 Mayor and Town Council will assume office on January 1, 2017.
