Major Snowstorm Possible Soon In Herndon: Report
There's pretty much no chance of a White Christmas, but forecasters say the weather could take a sudden turn soon.

HERNDON, VA -- Keep those boots and gloves handy, because forecasters are eyeing weather conditions that appear to be favorable to a major snowstorm sometime in the coming weeks here in Herndon.
The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang says that the polar vortex at the North Pole could be about ready to split, which would unleash a furious bout of winter weather on our region by the end of the month or into early January.
It's what happened last February, which caused a mild winter to suddenly result in snowstorm after snowstorm that lasted into the spring. Four consecutive nor'easters pounded the East Coast during that period.

A similar polar vortex disruptions happened in 2009-10, which is when we had one of the largest blizzards in recent memory here in the D.C. area.
Predicting the polar vortex's behavior isn't easy since it is so fickle, CWG noted, but right now modeling systems believe that a disruption will happen either at the end of December of early January.

While these phenomena are tough to predict, forecasters are growing increasingly confident because every simulation in the American modeling system predicts it will happen within the next two weeks, CWG writes.
