Veterans Day 2019: Ceremonies, What's Open, Closed In Herndon

HERNDON, VA — Veterans Day is a unique holiday for a couple of reasons: 1) it's always on the same date and is therefore on a different day of the week every year, and 2) it's a borderline holiday in that some people get the day off and others don't.

Veterans Day, originally called Armistice Day, is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed each Nov. 11 to honor veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It differs from Memorial Day in that Veterans Day honors all who have served, while Memorial Day specifically honors those who died in military service.

This year, Veterans Day is on a Monday, so you may be wondering exactly what to expect in terms of openings and closures in our area, as well as any local ceremonies honoring veterans. Here's a breakdown:

Government Offices: Closed

DMV: Closed

Animal shelter: Always closed on Mondays

Schools: Open

Post Office: Closed

Courts: Closed

Libraries: Closed Nov. 11-12

Trash collection: Regular schedule

Parks: Open

Fairfax Connector: Holiday weekday service

Metro: The Metrorail system will be open from 5 a.m. until 11:30 p.m., and trains will run on a Saturday schedule (every 12 minutes during daytime hours). Off-peak fares will be in effect, and parking is free at Metrorail parking facilities. Buses will also operate on a Saturday schedule, but some buses that typically run past midnight on Saturdays will not operate.
