What's Open, Closed In Herndon For MLK Jr. Day 2020
Find out what offices are closed and services are affected by Monday's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday observance.

HERNDON, VA -- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. forever shaped the American landscape as the most prominent leader of the civil rights movement. The memory of King, who was killed by an assassin's bullet in 1968, is honored on Monday, Jan. 20 (he was born Jan. 15) with a federal holiday.
But just what is open and what is closed in our area on MLK Day? Here's a quick breakdown to help you out.
- Fairfax County Government Offices: Closed
- Fairfax County Courts: Closed
- Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed
- Town of Herndon Offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 20
- Herndon Community Center will be open Monday, Jan. 20, 6 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Classes will meet as scheduled
- Children’s Performing Art Series, Rainbow Rock: Monday, Jan. 20, 10:30 a.m. More information can be found here.
- Recycling Collection: Recycling will not be collected on Monday, Jan. 20. Recycling normally collected on Monday will be collected Tuesday, Jan. 21.
- Herndon Centennial Golf Course will be open Monday, Jan. 20, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
The Reston Community Center will be hosting the 35th Annual Reston Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration with community service projects and performances from Saturday, Jan. 18-Monday, Jan. 20.

Saturday, Jan. 18
- Community Service Events: The Reston Community Center partners with the Southgate Community, Reston Association, Cornerstones and The Closet on service projects starting at 9 a.m. around the community. Contact Ha Brock, Reston Association Volunteer & Community Outreach Coordinator, at 703-435-7986 or habrock@reston.org to volunteer.
- Donated Items Sorting: RCC partners with Cornerstones and the office of the Hunter Mill District Supervisor for a community service project in support of the Hunter Mill Winter Coat Closet. Volunteers (ages 6 and older) are needed to sort and organize the donated items. 1-3 p.m., at North County Government Center, 1801 Cameron Glen Drive.
- Reston Community Orchestra: Keeping the Dream: 14th Annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 4 p.m., at RCC Hunter Woods. All ages. Free and donations are appreciated.
