What's Open, What's Closed In Herndon On New Year's Day 2020

HERNDON, VA — While New Year's Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, be aware the holiday may affect the hours of area government offices, schools, public transportation and more.

Town of Herndon Offices: All offices will be closed New Year's Day.

Fairfax County Government Offices: Offices will also be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1, for the New Year’s holiday. However, some facilities are open and schedules vary.

Courts: Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Dec. 23-Jan. 3.

Post Offices: Closed Jan. 1. No mail will be delivered.

Fairfax Connector and Fastran: Fairfax Connector bus service will operate regular weekday service on Dec. 31 and Sunday service on Jan. 1. Fastran will not operate Jan. 1. See www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector for more information.

Metrorail: On Dec. 31, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. with special late night service until 2 a.m. New Year's Day. On Jan. 1, Metrorail will operate 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities New Year's Day, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.

Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. See bus timetables.

Libraries: Branches close at 5 p.m. Dec. 31 and remain closed Jan. 1.

Parks: A majority of Fairfax County Park Authority operated parks are closed Dec. 31. All parks, with the exception of most RECenters, are closed Jan. 1. All RECenters except GWRC are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/holiday-hours for more information.

Animal Shelter: Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Dec. 31 and closed Jan. 1.

Trash & Recycling: In Herndon, trash normally collected Wednesday will be picked up Tuesday. For Fairfax County, there will be no change to trash/recycling collection on New Year's Day. Service for the rest of the week will be delayed by one day. Contact private providers for any schedule changes.

Landfills/Recycling Centers: The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) and I-95 Landfill (9850 Furnace Road, Lorton) close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and remain closed through Jan. 1.

Movie Theaters: Most area movie theaters will be open New Year's Day. We would encourage calling your theater of choice to confirm hours.

Grocery Stores: Area grocery stores hours are as follows —

  • Safeway: Some Safeway locations will be closing early New Year's Day. Call your preferred location to confirm hours.
  • Giant Food: All stores are open New Year's Day, though specific hours may vary by location.
  • Harris Teeter: Open regular hours.
  • ALDI: Closed Jan. 1.
  • Whole Foods: Many locations will be open with modified hours. Call your preferred location to confirm hours.
  • Trader Joe's: Closed Jan. 1.
