2020 Election Day Observed As State Holiday In Fairfax County

While the Office of Elections will be open for election activities, most county government facilities will be closed.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — With new Virginia legislation replacing Lee-Jackson Day with Election Day as a state holiday, Fairfax County government will observe the state holiday.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, most Fairfax County government facilities will be closed, but Office of Elections activities will be occurring. Residents will have access to their polling places.

  • Fairfax County Government Center and most county government facilities will be closed on Nov. 3, but the Office of Elections will be open for Election Day at designated buildings. There is a 24/7 drop box outside the Fairfax County Government Center for completed absentee ballots. The deadline to deliver a completed absentee ballot at the government center drop box or any polling place is 7 p.m. on Nov. 3. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by Nov. 3 and received by the Office of Elections by noon on Nov. 6.
  • The Fairfax County Park Authority will keep certain sites that serve as polling places open for voting purposes only on Nov. 3. These include Cub Run RECenter, South Run RECenter, Oak Marr RECenter, Spring Hill RECenter, Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor Center and Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor Center. Other Park Authority sites will be open as scheduled. The grounds at Green Spring Gardens and Frying Pan Farm Park will remain open on Nov. 3, as well as the Indoor Arena, carousel and wagon rides at Frying Pan Farm Park.
  • Fairfax County Public Schools lists Nov. 2 and 3 as student holidays.
  • Fairfax County Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed on Nov. 3.

On Election Day, Fairfax County voters will decide on races for president, U.S. House and U.S. Senate as well as state constitutional amendments and Fairfax County bond questions.
