3 Fairfax Schools Competing In 2021 National Japan Bowl

WASHINGTON, DC — Students from three Fairfax County high schools will compete in the 2021 National Japan Bowl, the nation's top Japanese language and Japan-related studie competition, on April 8 and 9.

Teams from Hayfield Secondary School, Lake Braddock Secondary School and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology are participating. The 29th National Japan Bowl will be held virtually by the Japan-America Society of Washington DC.

The competition includes 200 of the country’s top high school Japanese language students putting their knowledge of Japanese language, culture and history to the test. Students typically prepare throughout the year for the two days of competition. The competition's top winners get to visit Japan for cultural experiences over a week.

In 2020, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology placed first at Level IV and fourth at Level II. Lake Braddock Secondary School placed fifth at Level II.

The championship rounds and closing ceremony will be livestreamed on YouTube Friday, April 9 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The competition expects thousands of viewers from the U.S. and Japan during the championship.
