A documentary-style play derived from interviews and first-person accounts, The Laramie Project focuses on the reaction to the 1998 murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. Written by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, the play draws on hundreds of interviews conducted by the theatre company with citizens of the town, as well as journal entries and published news reports. Thirty students portray nearly 70 characters.

Shepard’s death at the hands of two Laramie youth was denounced as a hate crime and brought attention to the lack of hate crime laws in various states, including Wyoming. ADVISORY: subject matter may not be suitable for younger children.

Performances run Thu., Nov 21 through Sat., Nov. 23 at 7 pm, with a matinee on Sat., Nov. 23 at 2 pm. There will be a post-show discussion after the afternoon performance.

Tickets are $10 and $5, available online and will also be available at the door.

Edison High School is located at 5801 Franconia Road, Alexandria, VA 22310. www.edisontheatrecompany.org
