United Community Ministries announced the hiring of Jose Flores as its new manager of the Cynthia N. Hull Food Pantry according to the company news release.
The organization is the leading provider of human services in Fairfax County with a goal of building strong families and communities.
"Each week day at our Food Pantry, an average of 80 to 100 families visit for food assistance," said Richard Dobber UCM Director of Social Services. "Supplemental groceries help them preserve limited income for other critical needs like housing and utility bills. Last year we distributed more than 600,000 pounds of food to people in Alexandria."
Over 70,000 people in Fairfax County are deemed "food insecure," with children accounting for close to half of that number. According to Fairfax County Public Schools, more than 50 percent of children and youth in schools adjacent to UCM service areas receive a free or reduced lunch.
Locales that UCM services are defined as low-income communities where a vast amount of residents have limited access to affordable and healthy food retailers.
