Fairfax County Police Permitted To Enforce Jeff Todd Way

FORT BELVOIR, VA — After local leaders pushed for the authority for Fairfax County Police to enforce traffic laws on Jeff Todd Way, that permission has been granted on the federally-owned road.

Per the police department, county and police department leaders came to an agreement with federal officials to allow the county's police officers to enforce local and state traffic laws on the roadway.

"Throughout the years, we have received a lot of requests for enforcement on this roadway," said Officer Katie Watts in a video update. "We have been limited due to the fact that this roadway is on federal property."

WTOP previously reported that county leaders have pushed the Pentagon to sign an agreement since 2016. Leaders sent another request this year.

Jeff Todd Way, a federally-owned road on Fort Belvoir opened in 2014, connects Telegraph Road and Richmond Highway in southeastern Fairfax County. Because it is owned by the federal government, Fort Belvoir military police officers had jurisdiction to enforce traffic laws rather than Fairfax County Police.

Local leaders have heard frustrations about speeding on the road and lack of enforcement by federal law enforcement. Jeff Todd Way has a speed limit of 40 mph between Telegraph Road and Pole Road and 35 mph between Pole Road and Richmond Highway.
