Fairfax County Stuff The Bus Food Drives Return In September
With the pandemic increasing the need for food, upcoming food drives will be held across the county.
FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County's Stuff the Bus food drivers are held twice a year at times when donations are known to drop off: after winter holidays and over the summer. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic is increasing demand for assistance. The second Stuff the Bus events of 2020 will be held on two Saturdays, Sept. 12 and 26.
Stuff the Bus food drives will take place in buses at 21 locations throughout Fairfax County and Fairfax City. To allow for social distancing, buses will be parked in less-frequented locations rather than grocery store parking lots. Buses will be collecting donations at all locations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 12 and 26.
Fairfax County had an estimated 5.4 percent food insecurity rate in 2018; the rate is expected to be 10.5 percent in 2020, according to Feeding America. Citing the Capital Area Food Bank's Hunger Report 2020, the county says 72,460 people in Fairfax County are experiencing food insecurity and nonprofit partners have reported 30 to 400 percent increases in people seeking assistance.
