Fire Heavily Damages West Springfield Home

The blaze displaced one adult, but no injuries were reported in the Saturday night fire, says Fairfax County Fire Department.

SPRINGFIELD, VA — A faulty electrical outlet caused a fire Saturday night that heavily damaged a single-family home in West Springfield, according to the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department. The blaze displaced one adult from the home, but there were no injuries reported.

Firefighters responded at 8:50 p.m. Saturday to the fire at the two-story house in the 6900 block of Spelman Drive, the department said. As they arrived, they saw flames coming from both floors of the house.

The crews located the fire on the second floor, with minor extension into the attic, and quickly brought it under control. The home was unoccupied at the time of the blaze, the department said.

Fire investigators determined that the blaze was accidental in nature and started in a second-floor bedroom. It was caused by an electrical event called "resistant heat" within an outlet, the department said.
