Water Rescue Reported In Fairfax County, Forecast For Weekend
The National Weather Service doesn't expect rain and thunderstorms to let up in the next few days.
FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A water rescue was reported in Fairfax County amid a flood warning for parts of the county and Fairfax City on Thursday. The National Weather Service issued the warning amid heavy rainfall, and wet weather could continue for several days.
Per the fire department, the swift water rescue has occurred on Woodburn Road in Annandale. The location near a creek is prone to flooding.

In the Strathmeade Springs area of Annandale, forecasters reported the water level was approaching flood stage on Thursday morning. Woodburn Road was expected to be covered by about six inches of water, and portions of the County Trail were forecast to experience flooding.

Fairfax County Police reported the following road closures as of 2:30 p.m.:
- Woodburn Road and Spicewood Drive, Annandale: Closed due to high water
- Prosperity Avenue and Morningside Drive, Mantua Reopened
- Morningside Drive and Woodhill Place, Annandale: Reopened
- Burke Road and Heritage Square Drive, Burke: Reopened
- Burke Lake Road and Jeremiah Court, Fairfax Station: Reopened
Fairfax County emergency officials urge residents to "turn around, don't drown" when encountering flooded roads. Residents should avoid from creeks and storm water ponds, which can see water levels rise quickly.

According to the National Weather Service, the doppler radar found heavy rain around 9:25 a.m. that will cause flooding. About an inch of rain has already fallen, and an additional inch is possible.
The flood warning included these locations: Reston, Annandale, Springfield, Fairfax, Vienna, Falls Church, Mantua, Fort Belvoir, Pimmit Hills, Burke, Oakton, Lincolnia, Tysons Corner, Lorton, Franconia, Wolf Trap, Great Falls, Merrifield, Newington and Lake Barcroft.

Forecasts indicate Thursday likely isn't the end of rain and thunderstorms. Here is the NWS forecast for Fairfax, Virginia into the weekend:
Thursday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 1 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Some storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, with a high near 83 and 60 percent chance of precipitation. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch are possible. At night, a chance of showers and thunderstorms continues. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. The chance of precipitation is 50 percent.
Friday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 4 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, with a high near 83 with a 60 percent chance of precipitation. At night, showers and thunderstorms are likely, mainly before 7 p.m. Some storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts will be between a tenth and quarter of an inch, although thunderstorms could bring higher amounts.
Saturday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 1 p.m., then showers and thunderstorms likely after 1 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, with a high near 81. The chance of precipitation is 70 percent. At night, showers and a thunderstorm are possible, and some storms could bring heavy rain. The low temperature will be around 69. The chance of precipitation at night is 80 percent.
Sunday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 9 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 9 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. High near 83. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. At night, a chance of showers and thunderstorms, and partly cloudy with a low around 68. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.
