Icy I-495 Crash Saturday: Police Identify Man Killed

Virginia State Police have identified the man who died Saturday after an icy crash on the Beltway involving 23 cars.

Police have identified the man who was killed Saturday morning after a 23-car crash on ice-slicked Interstate-495. Liem T. Nguyen, 41, lived in the Springfield area near Kingstowne, off of Edsall Road, according to Virginia State Police.

Through extensive investigation and based on multiple witness accounts, Virginia State Police said Wednesday that they have determined that Nguyen was struck during the course of the multi-vehicle crashes in the northbound lanes of I-495 around the 50 mile marker, near the Arlington Boulevard exit.

Nguyen was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado north on I-495 when it spun out of control on the icy roadway, struck the Jersey wall and spun back into the travel lanes, according to police. He got out of his vehicle and spoke briefly to another driver just moments before oncoming traffic began sliding out of control and crashing, according to police.
