Thunderstorms Approach, Then Big Warm Up: Latest NoVA Forecast

The National Weather Service said the radar detected a line of thunderstorms forming in the DC region.

VIRGINIA — Another chance of severe weather is impacting the Northern Virginia region Friday ahead of a heat wave.

The National Weather Service issued a short-term forecast indicating a line of thunderstorms will impact the DC metro area. At 12:16 p.m., the radar found developing thunderstorms along a line extending from the American Legion Bridge to near Bull Run. NWS says the storms were heading southeast at 15 mph. Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph and pea-sized hail are possible.

The impacted areas are the District of Columbia, Fairfax County, Arlington County, Falls Church, Alexandria, Prince William County, Manassas, Manassas Park, central and southeast Montgomery County, Maryland, and Prince George's County, Maryland.

A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for the south central District of Columbia, southern Arlington County, east central Fairfax County, City of Alexandria and southwestern Prince George's County, Maryland. In this area, 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail are possible. Forecasters say damaging winds could cause trees and large branches to fall, and localized power outages can't be ruled out.

The greater region is under a hazardous weather outlook due to scattered thunderstorms with strong to damaging wind gusts. In addition, a special marine warning has been issued for the Tidal Potomac River Indian Head to Cobb Island, Maryland and Tidal Potomac River from Key Bridge to Indian Head, Maryland until 2:15 p.m.

After this next chance of storms passes, prepare for some heat. High temperatures will be in the 90s at least through early next week. A chance of showers and thunderstorms isn't expected to reappear until Tuesday.

Below is the DC forecast for the upcoming days.

Friday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. At night, mostly clear with a low of 65.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 91 and mostly clear at night with a low of 69.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 94 and mostly clear at night with a low of 72.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. At night, partly cloudy with a low of 71.

Tuesday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. At night, a chance of thunderstorms before 8 p.m. and mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent at night
