Exhibit – Santa Through the Ages: The story of Santa is endearing and famous worldwide. This colorful exhibit depicts Santa through a variety of objects. Discover the history behind this jolly old elf as part of a guided tour. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (through Jan. 29; daily — except Tuesdays) at Sully Historic Site. Flying Squirrels – Gliding in Tonight : Join the naturalist calling in these amazing gliders of the night, look for flying squirrels at roosting boxes and learn how you can encourage flying squirrels to visit your yard. From 6 to 7 p.m. at Hidden Oaks Nature Center. Ages 3 and up. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. $6/person. Register online. For information, call 703-941-1065.

Workhouse Winter Wonderland: Celebrate the holiday season creatively with holiday activities, fine art, entertainment, food and music. Get started on your holiday shopping list, while supporting local artists when you purchase artful gifts, including special small works and holiday displays to fit every budget. Take a magical sleigh bell ride around the historic campus in horse-drawn carriages. Enjoy delicious holiday treats such as s’mores and roasted chestnuts by the fire. Grown-ups will enjoy sipping favorite holiday drinks such as hot toddies and spiked hot chocolate. Take a walk down memory lane with classic holiday movies on the big screen in the W-3 Theatre. At dusk, gather around for an exciting artistic light show and sing-a-long welcoming in the holiday season. From 3 to 7 p.m. at the Workhouse Arts Center. Free admission. Turkey Walk : Discover the wild turkey’s habits, signs and secret ways during a walk in the cedar forest. From 10 to 11 a.m. at E.C. Lawrence Park. Ages 3 and up. $5/person. Register online. For information, call 703-631-0013.

Donuts With Santa: Santa returns for a family event just in time for the holidays. Each ticketholder will enjoy two donuts and a choice of juice or coffee while Santa and his elves read a classic Christmas story and lead a fun-filled family sing-a-long. Meet-and-greet with Santa, Mrs. Claus and the elves; parents are encouraged to bring their cameras. From 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in W16, Vulcan Gallery at the Workhouse Arts Center. $20/person. Children’s Theatre – “The Nutcracker: Playwright Vianlix Mestey produces an original re-telling of the favorite holiday story in play form. The World Between the Wars: The years following World War I would be filled with global economic and political turmoil that brought about the Great Depression; the rise of communism, fascism and Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist Party; and the Spanish Civil War.
