Spike in Auto Thefts Calls for Increased Awareness

With the cold weather causing people to leave vehicles unattended while warming up, there have been an increased amount of auto thefts in the area.
The Prince William County Police Department reports that the Lake Ridge and Dale City areas have specifically experienced a spike in the crime.
The police advise residents to follow these tips to avoid falling victim to an auto theft:

- Always lock your vehicle, even if you are expecting to be away for only a few minutes
- Do not leave your keys in your vehicle
- Do not leave your car running an unattended to warm it up
- Park in well-lit areas at night
- Park your vehicle in the driveway rather than the street
- Consider a car alarm for added protection
- Be on the lookout for suspicious persons or activity during the dya as well as during evening hours
- Report all suspicious activity to the police
