What you should know about canine flu

Are you concerned your dog might have the flu? Let our Northern Virginia veterinarians help you.

Are you concerned about your dog's health? He or she may be suffering from canine flu. Don't worry. Our experienced and knowledgeable veterinarians will run a full examination and do lab tests to verify a diagnosis of canine influenza. Because this is a virus, antibiotic treatments are not the answer, but you can make your dog more comfortable by following these tips:

  • Plenty of fluids—if your dog becomes dehydrated because he or she is unwilling to drink, we can administer IV fluids if necessary.
  • Tests and medications to diagnose and treat any secondary bacterial infections (e.g. pneumonia).
  • Nutritious, easy-to-digest foods and supplements to support your dog’s immune system (again, talk with us if your dog is having trouble eating or drinking).
  • A quiet, comfortable, cozy spot for your dog to sleep, away from other dogs.

The best thing you can do you can for your pet is to take immediate action if you suspect illness.
