Woodbridge High School robotics qualifies for World Tournament for the 6th consecutive year.
WSHS Robotics team 1575 qualifies for the Vex World Robotics tournament
On Friday, February 17th and Saturday, February 18th, the Woodbridge Senior High School Robotics Team participated in the Virginia VEX Robotics State Championships. Of the 48 teams from all over Virginia, WSHS sent 8 of their 9 robotics teams to the state tournament to vie for the state title and the right to move on to the VEX World Championships. Four of Woodbridge Senior High Schools eight robots got through the round robin qualifiers and continued to compete in the playoffs for the title. In the end, Woodbridge Senior High School Team D made it to the finals on an alliance with Team 180 from Haymarket and 6603H from Patriot High School. They lost in the finals to an alliance made up of Team 8086A and 6740B from Glenn Allen, and 46C from Seton Junior-Senior High School but still placed high enough to earn spots to the world tournament. Team 1575D captained by Anders Hansen and team members Bella Ortiz-Miller, Ryan Oubre, John Weidley, Emily Nolan, Alyssa Ehlers, and Tiffany Ha, finished as Tournament Finalists. Team 1575X captained by Andrew Tsai and Team members Skylar Matsuda, Daniel Diaz, Kayla Yarbrough, Hannah Morilak, Skylar Petty, James Tsai, and Eric Spanbaur won the Community Award for making a concerted effort to raise support in their community for technology education programs. Team 1575X and Team B Captained by Michael Griese and team members Ryan Crow, Savannah Brown, Sean Zylich, Arran Scaife, Katyana Russell, and Mesgana Dinare earned a spot to the world tournament for having the Robotics Skills highest point total overall in the state for the season for teams that didn’t qualify for worlds in another way. Now, WSHS will be sending 3 robots to compete against the world in the VEX World Robotics Championships to be held in Louisville KY from April 19th to April 22nd at the Kentucky Expo Center. There they will match designs and wits with 540 teams from all over the world. Congratulations Woodbridge, 6 consecutive appearances in the world tournament and 3 of the best robots in the world belong to WSHS!
Woodbridge robotics participated in 5 regional competitions leading up to the State Championship tournament. In each of those Tournaments at least one Woodbridge Team was part of the tournament champion alliance. Teams A, X, D, W, H, B, and S were all part of at least one Tournament Champion alliance, meaning that they won the tournament. Additionally, Team D won the Excellence Award in three of those tournaments and Team X won the Excellence Award in one tournament. The Excellence Award is given to the overall top team. It is the highest honor given out in the VEX Robotics Competition. The recipient of this award is a team that exemplifies overall excellence in creating a high quality VEX robotics program. This team excels in many areas and is a shining example of dedication, devotion, hard work, and teamwork. As a strong contender in numerous award categories, this team deserves to be recognized for building a quality robotics program and a “team” committed to quality in everything that they do.
