Alex Ovechkin Invests In Washington Spirit Women's Soccer Team

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Hockey star Alex Ovechkin is the latest noteworthy name to join the investors group for the Washington Spirit women's soccer team. Ovechkin joins several other high-profile investors including Chelsea Clinton, Jenna Bush Hager, and gymnast Dominique Dawes.

The Washington Spirit play in the National Women's Soccer League, the top women's soccer league in the United States. This year, the Spirit will play their home games at Segra Field in Leesburg and at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.

Ovechkin and his wife, Nastya Ovechkina, join a slate of business and community leaders who make up the Washington Spirit's investor group. Ovechkin, a Washington Capitals star whose father was a professional soccer player, said he was looking forward to supporting women's sports in the area.

"Nastya and I are very excited to join the Washington Spirit investor group. I’m excited to help grow women’s soccer in Washington D.C.," Ovechkin said. "Being a huge soccer fan that I am, I can’t wait to attend the Spirit games and practices and help promote these great players."

Steve Baldwin is the managing partner of the Washington Spirit. "Alex is one of the most iconic and successful athletes to ever represent a Washington sports franchise," he said. "Additionally, the work he and Nastya do in our community is remarkable and a great fit with the values of our club."

The Washington Spirit announced a total of 13 new investors on Monday. The new investors include community and business leaders like Carol Melton, Michelle Freeman, and Jodie McLean. A complete list of the Spirit's investors is available on their website.

The Washington Spirit begin their regular season with an away match on May 16 against the Orlando Pride. Their first home game will be held on May 26 against the Houston Dash at Segra Field.
