Claude Moore Gives Surprise $70,000 Donation to Local Nonprofits

The Claude Moore Charitable Foundation stepped out of its normal grant cycle to aid three Loudoun nonprofits during the holidays this year.

The Claude Moore Charitable Foundation announced a surprise donation to three Loudoun County-based nonprofits Friday, Nov. 21 to help provide basic needs to the county’s most disadvantaged individuals and families.

The foundation donated $70,000 to Loudoun Interfaith Relief, Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter and Loudoun Free Clinic.

“The Claude Moore Charitable Foundation always comes through for the Loudoun community,” said Loudoun Interfaith Relief Executive Director Jennifer Montgomery. “They work diligently and effectively to make Loudoun County a better place to live on so many levels and to help struggling families. These gifts are just incredible and couldn’t have come at a better time. We were completely shocked and so grateful.”

Loudoun Interfaith Relief, the county’s largest emergency food relief organization, received $30,000. The food pantry provided 1.2 million pounds of food to more than 13,000 individuals, 43 percent of whom are children. The organization distributes food to families six days a week and made 80,000 visits last year alone.

The Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter, which provides assistance to adult and child victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse, received $20,000. In 2014 alone, the organization assisted more than 1,000 individuals and more provided 2,709 bed nights of shelter to women and children.

The Loudoun Free Clinic, which provides high-quality medical care to low-income, uninsured adults in Loudoun County, received $20,000. Since 2002, the Loudoun Free Clinic has cared for thousands of people struggling with emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions. The organization coordinates all of their visits, medications, tests, surgeries, and often transportation and ensures that all treatments are provided at no cost to patients.

Founded in 1987, the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation was founded to enhance educational opportunities for children across the Commonwealth. The Foundation Trustees are Peter A. Arntson, Gary W. Brown, Guy M. Gravatt and Leigh B. Middleditch, Jr. CMCF invests in effective community based nonprofits and educational institutions based in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The organization approved $2.4 million in grants to 60 nonprofits in 2014 alone.

“The funds that The Claude Moore Charitable Foundation generously provided to LAWS will help us to provide emergency assistance to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse, including emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, and advocacy,” said Nicole Acosta, Executive Director of LAWS.
