Dorothy Thomas Holmes

Dorothy Thomas Holmes of Leesburg, Virginia died peacefully on October 9, 2014. She was born on December 23, 1915 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late Clara Sauer Thomas and Walter James Thomas.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 44 years, Parker Manfred Holmes, her son, James Parker Holmes, and granddaughter, Elizabeth Katherine Holmes. She is survived by children Anita Claire Mahood (James) and Jeannette Elizabeth Holmes, daughter-in-law Barbara Holmes, grandchildren Parker Dorsey (Katy McNabb) and Shannon Dorsey (Brian Arnold) , Jeannette Thatcher (Sean) and William Mahood, great-grandchildren Kendall and Quinn Dorsey, Thora and Cillian Arnold and Connor, Hannah, and Parker Thatcher.

She was the recipient of the Pro Ecclesia Medal from Pope Paul VI, Past President Milwaukee Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, Past President Sacramento Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Past President Sacramento Church Members Credit Union, Past President Sacramento Women’s Council. She was elected to the founding Board of the National Council of Catholic Laity. She served on the Advisory Council of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. She was a charter member of Widow Persons Association of California, Chapter 1. She was active in Presentation Catholic Church of Sacramento for 45 years, serving as lector, Eucharistic minister, President of the Parish Council and of the Women’s Council. She was also active in Church Women United State Board and Sacramento Unit, and in the Sacramento Republican Women Federated.

A Memorial Mass will take place at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Sacramento, CA at a later date. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Sacramento, CA.
