Funeral Set For Friday For Town's Former Police Chief

James Kidwell served on Leesburg's police force for 34 years, retiring in 1995.

LEESBURG, VA — A funeral is scheduled Friday morning for James Martin Kidwell, Leesburg's former chief of police. He died Monday morning with his wife and children at his bedside, according to the Leesburg Police Department.

Kidwell began his law enforcement career in 1961 as a police officer in Leesburg. He became the town's police chief in 1972 and served in that role until he retired in 1995 at the age of 55, the department said on its Facebook page.

Kidwell "leaves a legacy of transformation, growth and innovation." the department said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kidwell family."

Visitation took place on Thursday evening at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, at 158 Catoctin Circle SE in Leesburg. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel, with a graveside service to follow at Union Cemetery, at 323 N. King St. in Leesburg.
