Laura Tierney to Speak on #WinAtSocial Program at Foxcroft School

Laura Tierney, founder and CEO of The Social Institute, an organization that empowers students to navigate social media and technology positively, has been named a 2019-20 Alison Harrison Goodyear ’29 Fellow at Foxcroft School and will keynote the launch of a school-wide Wellness Weekend, Thursday, January 9 at 7:30pm in the Audrey Bruce Currier Library at Foxcroft School.
Combining her standout sports leadership experience with her career managing social media for world-class brands, Tierney will discuss why she was driven to create an organization dedicated to helping teens navigate social media positively and thoughtfully. A digital native herself, she bridges the gap between adults and students as one of the nation's leading pioneers in positive social media education.

Featured in The Washington Post, USA TODAY, and NPR, Tierney’s organization partners with schools nationwide. The Institute’s unique gamified social media curriculum, co-created with over 50,000 students at 60 schools, has been touted as the gold standard in the country.
By reinforcing character and leadership strengths like empathy, integrity, and teamwork, and by teaching students and their role models to champion high character on all social platforms, the program seeks to empower students to #WinAtSocial media and technology by strengthening one’s reputation, encouraging and inspiring others, seizing collegiate and career opportunities, and even changing your world for the better.
Foxcroft has adopted the #WinAtSocial curriculum as part of this year’s wellness program with the goal of helping girls to become increasingly more self-aware, to live true to what they value and find ways to make their interests, goals, and obligations sustainable.
A highlight of the upcoming all-school Wellness Weekend, Tierney will also meet with student leaders and employ their help in conducting a dynamic and interactive workshop engaging the entire student body in her #WinAtSocial program (winatsocial.com), which uses gamification to teach seven recommended standards for prosocial behavior online.
In 2018, Tierney received the Triangle Business Journal’s 40-under-40 award. She currently serves on Duke University’s Learning Innovation Advisory Council, helping Duke imagine the future of learning both on-campus and online. An unshakable optimist and competitive athlete at heart, Tierney is a graduate of Duke University where she was a four-time Duke All-American, two-time team captain, and Duke Athlete of the Decade for field hockey.

Offered through the generosity of the family and friends of Alison Harrison Goodyear, Foxcroft Class of 1929, the Goodyear Fellowship program, brings distinguished speakers and provocative performers to Foxcroft to deliver a keynote address and conduct small group seminars with students. Fellowship recipients during the program’s 48-year history include such remarkable voices as Maya Angelou, James Baker III, Doris Kearns Goodwin, David McCullough, Sally Ride, Barbara Walters, tech entrepreneur Sheena Allen, National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Jennifer Pharr Davis, “Hello Fears” founder Michelle Poler, and most recently GenHERation founder Katlyn Grasso.
