Leesburg Man Wins $1M Powerball Lottery

Donald Shomaker, of Leesburg, Va. won $1 million with a Powerball ticket that matched five numbers in the Virginia Lottery.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Donald Shomaker, of Leesburg, Va. won $1 million in the Virginia Lottery with a Powerball ticket that matched five numbers, according to a Virginia Lottery announcement.

Shomaker told the Virginia Lottery that he knew that he had won on July 16 but for unexplained reasons didn't turn the ticket in for 3 months, according to the Virginia Lottery.

He bought the winning ticket at Gasmart, located at 14425 James Monroe Highway in Leesburg. Shomaker used Easy Pick, allowing the computer to randomly select the numbers on his ticket. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

The winning numbers for that drawing were 11-17-40-50-62, and the Powerball number was 26. His ticket was one of just four nationwide to match the first five numbers, and the only one in Virginia, according to the Virginia Lottery.

Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The Virginia Lottery generates more than $1.6 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools. Operating entirely on revenue from the sale of Lottery products, the Virginia Lottery generated a record $588 million for Virginia’s public schools in Fiscal Year 2016, according to the Virginia Lottery.
