Leesburg Restaurant Inspections: Cell Phone, Pain Relievers Found

LEESBURG, VA — Local health officials recently inspected food preparation and storage at food establishments in Leesburg and western Loudoun County. During the period from Jan. 23-Feb. 3, 2020, inspectors found a total of 58 violations at 19 restaurants in Leesburg and western Loudoun County.

The health inspector found 10 violations at the Leesburg Public House during a Jan. 28 inspection. Among the violations were raw shell eggs stored above romaine lettuce in the walk-in cooler and ground beef stored above salmon in the reach-in cooler. Also, an ice machine observed by the inspector was not clean to the sight and touch, according to the inspection report.

At a Panera Bread in Leesburg, the inspector saw a personal cell phone resting on a cutting board that was being used. In the report, the inspector said that equipment food contact surfaces and utensils must be cleaned at any time during operation when contamination may have occurred. The person in charge washed, rinsed and sanitized the cutting board after the cell phone was removed.

During an inspection of the Leesburg Diner on Jan. 24, ceiling paint was observed peeling by the walk-in cooler above the storage freezer. The restaurant was told to fix the ceiling to prevent possible food contamination.

At the Travinia Italian Kitchen in Leesburg, the inspector noticed the safety guard for the mixer had an accumulation of old food debris on it. The restaurant was instructed to clean non-food contact surfaces as they become soiled to the sight and touch.

The inspector, during a visit to Thaiverse Restaurant in Lovettsville, noticed pain reliever stored above the food prep area. The restaurant was instructed to maintain a designated area for employees' personal items to avoid cross contamination. The pain reliever was removed during the inspection.

"In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations," according to Virginia Department of Health's website.
