Leesburg Restaurant Inspections: Cockroach, Flies, Dirty Sponge

LEESBURG, VA — Local health officials recently inspected food preparation and storage at food establishments in Leesburg and other areas of western Loudoun County. During the period Feb. 13-21, 2020, inspectors found a total of 54 violations at 17 restaurants.

An inspector visited Silk Restaurant & Banquet in Leesburg Feb. 13 and found a live cockroach in a sink in the kitchen. The inspector noted that pest control measures should be used because cockroaches can carry diseases.

At Market Salamander in Middleburg near the Salamander Resort & Spa, a health inspector, on a follow-up visit, observed many flies on the walls in the kitchen. The inspector also observed black spots, paint peeling and flaking on the kitchen wall.

On a Feb. 19 inspection of Los Tios Grill Restaurant in Leesburg, an inspector reported 12 violations, including dried-up food debris on stored pans. The inspector also found a sponge used to wet the rim of margarita glasses that was visibly dirty with a dark residue. The restaurant threw away the sponge, the inspector said.

"In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations," according to Virginia Department of Health's website.
