Leesburg Restaurant Inspections: Moldy Marinara, Dusty Kitchen

LEESBURG, VA — Local health officials recently inspected food preparation and storage at food establishments in Leesburg and western Loudoun County. During the period from Feb. 3-Feb. 12, 2020, inspectors found a total of 71 violations at 19 restaurants in Leesburg and western Loudoun County.

Health officials found violations at the T’Kila Mexican Kitchen & Bar in both Leesburg and Aldie. At the Leesburg location, the inspector noted that raw mahi mahi and raw chicken were observed stored over a box of tortilla chips in a cooler. The restaurant was instructed to store raw proteins such as fish and chicken on the bottom shelf and store ready-to-eat foods above raw proteins. During the visit, the raw products were moved to the bottom shelf.

At the Aldie location of T’Kila Mexican Kitchen & Bar, the inspector noted that numerous ceiling tiles in the kitchen prep area were covered in brown residual and needed to be cleaned or replaced. The inspector instructed the restaurant to maintain clean ceiling tiles to prevent contamination.

At Bhai Shahab in Leesburg, the inspector observed an accumulation of dust on the ceiling and the wall in the kitchen next to ceiling vents. The restaurant was instructed to clean the ceiling and vents often enough to prevent dust from dropping or blowing into food.

At a restaurant at the Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club, the inspector found marinara sauce that had been held beyond seven days and appeared to have mold growth. The marinara was thrown away during the Feb. 4 inspection.

"In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations," according to Virginia Department of Health's website.
