Leesburg To Select 5 Sculptures For Display In Raflo Park

LEESBURG, VA — The Leesburg Commission on Public Arts is accepting submissions of sculptures that will be displayed in an outdoor sculpture garden in Raflo Park for a two-year period beginning in June. The deadline for artists to submit their sculptures for consideration is Feb. 7.

The commission will select five sculptures to be displayed in ArtsPARKs, adjacent to a paved walkway in Raflo Park along Harrison Street in downtown Leesburg near the W&OD Trail. The winning artists or artist teams will receive an honorarium of $1,000 per sculpture.

An advisory panel of three regional artists will review the submissions and select the five finalists. Artists will be notified by March 13. Once installed, the sculptures will be unveiled during a ceremony in early summer.

The sculptures will be available for sale and will be promoted by the town of Leesburg and Friends of Leesburg Public Arts during the two-year period.

The artists will be responsible for the installation of the works onto a permanent concrete pad. Accepted artwork must be stable, free standing, well fabricated and constructed of durable materials to withstand year round elements, including high winds, moisture and bright sunlight.

The competition has no stated theme, but the commission suggests artists could honor "the rich history of Leesburg, the environs, reflect a vision for the future, or celebrate and inspire the community."

ArtsPARKs is a collaboration between the Leesburg Commission on Public Art and the Friends of Leesburg Public Arts.
