LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — A brown and black female dog was found wandering up the driveway to the Loudoun County Animal Services building. The dog was found in the Waterford area where the shelter is located. But LCAS said it believes there is a chance the dog traveled a long way.

"We opened the doors for her and she walked right in!" LCAS wrote on its Facebook page.

LCAS is asking residents if they know who the owner of the dog is. People can call 703-777-0406 if they recognize the dog.

LCAS also is looking for the owners of a "friendly, spayed, female cat" who was found on Mayfair Drive NE in Leesburg. The animal shelter is asking residents to share the photo of the cat on social medial. Residents who may know who the owners are can call 703-777-0406.

The cat was found wearing a bowtie and collar. The finder accidentally took the cat from Leesburg to the Clarke County shelter. But LCAS went and picked her up from there. The further a cat gets from the area where they were found, the harder it is for the owners to find them, according to LCAS.

Both the cat and dog are still at the shelter on "stray hold" status. The cat, “Cherry,” will be going up for adoption shortly since no owners have been found, Talia Czapski, community relations manager for LCAS, said in an email to Patch.

"We try to track down the owners any way possible — this includes collar/tags, microchips, searching our lost/found reports, online groups and even dog licenses," Czapski said.

If a microchip is not registered to an owner, LCAS will try to track down where it was implanted and then work backwards to try and figure out who the owner might be, she said.

If a resident suspects their pet is lost, they should call LCAS at 703-777-0406 to file a lost report. And if a resident finds an animal, they should call LCAS to file a found report.

"We can also provide you with resources to help you find the owners," Czapski said. "In some cases we can even match the found report to a lost report right over the phone and connect you to the animal’s owner."
