Town Of Leesburg Offices Closed On Friday, June 18, For Juneteenth Observation

Leesburg, VA (June 11, 2021) – In observation of the Juneteenth holiday, all Town of Leesburg offices will be closed on Friday, June 18, 2021.

In June 2020, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam issued an executive order, making Juneteenth an official Virginia state holiday. The Leesburg Town Council declared Juneteenth a Town government holiday in September 2020. This is the first year it will officially be observed by the Town.

On June 19, 1865, a group of Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and slaves were free. Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States.
