White's Ferry Reopening Pushed Back By Ten Months To Early 2022

LEESBURG, VA — White's Ferry, a historic boat that used to take commuters from Virginia to Maryland, has delayed its reopening to early 2022, according to a news release from its operators. The operators, Chuck and Stacy Kuhn, said that the ferry has to gain use rights in Virginia before restarting.

The ferry ceased operations in December 2020 and was purchased by the Kuhns in February. They originally planned to get the ferry operational by April 2021.

"We stand ready and willing to reopen," Chuck Kuhn, who is the founder and CEO of JK Moving Services, said. "The ferry has ramifications for our local economy and the livelihoods of many people, from technology workers to retail employees to farm workers."

White's Ferry was established in 1786, and was still used by many area residents. When it was operational, the ferry carried 800 commuters on a daily basis, according to the news release.

"The former ferry owner Herb Brown and his team have been a pleasure to work with as have all the municipalities and states—all of which are interested in protecting this important transportation route," Chuck Kuhn said. "We will be seeking more help from the county and state to ensure this vital route serves our community and people."

The Kuhns plan on upgrading the ferry in the coming years to preserve its history and increase its environmental efficiency. The Kuhns said they are also working to preserve other landmarks in the area, including Westpark, the Middleburg Training Center, and the historic Wolver Hill farm.
